The holy month of Ramadan is being observed under exceptional circumstances in Goma, as the city remains under the control of M23 rebels following their capture of the area in January.

With uncertainty and insecurity looming, many traditional Ramadan practices have been disrupted. Worshippers are gathering in smaller numbers, with some choosing to pray at home rather than attend mosques.

“At the moment, some are meeting in their homes, but the Taraweeh prayer is held, as usual, at the mosque. But there aren’t as many of them as there used to be, but they are praying,” said Ahmed Salim, a Muslim resident of Goma.

On Friday, the mosque was filled with worshippers, united in faith but carrying the burden of conflict. Many expressed a shared hope for the return of peace.

“Already in our preaching, we are advocating peace, and we are also obliged to communicate in this way because, during the month, among our prayers, we ask for peace in the province and in the country in general,” said Maris Mambo, another worshipper.

This is the first time that Goma’s Muslim community is experiencing Ramadan under such stressful conditions. Religious leaders have reassured the faithful, emphasizing that they have received commitments from the new authorities regarding their safety.

“Our leaders went to see the new people in charge of the town. Thank God, they sent them the message and asked us not to worry and agreed that we could say our evening prayers in safety,” said Imam Djuma Dauda.

Despite these reassurances, insecurity remains a major concern. As violence tends to escalate after nightfall, mosques have advised worshippers living far from the city center to stay home for evening prayers.

For Goma’s Muslim community, this Ramadan has become not only a symbol of resilience but also a time of deep reflection and hope for a peaceful future. In the face of ongoing turmoil, the faithful continue to turn to prayer, seeking peace and reconciliation for their city.
